Appointments Process

  • Appointments will be made in-line with 2 year cycles
  • Candidates will be shortlisted via anonymous application review
  • All roles have a clear remit outlined prior to application
  • Appointments will be made based on performance at interview
  • The High Performance Coach will make appointment recommendations to the Coaches Commission



  • Annual reviews will be conducted by the Coaches Commission and High Performance Coach
  • The Coaches Commission and High Performance Coach can terminate an appointment due to poor performance during the review cycle

Head Coach

Job Specification

Summary of duties and responsibilities include but are not necessarily limited to:


  • Lead the recruitment of athletes and establish effective communication lines with athletes, club coaches and support staff
  • Lead the National Team with differentiated and appropriate training and competitive experiences for selected athletes
  • Lead the development and implementation of resources through effective planning, management, and monitoring of budgets
  • Create a long-term development plan with identified performance goals in line with SV Strategic Plan, high performance operational targets and SV, CEV, and FIVB calendars
  • Manage programmes to support athlete and coach development, including individual sessions and camps
  • Support the recruitment and selection of coaches in support of our National Team programmes
  • Liaise with Scottish Volleyball, the High Performance Coach & Coaching Manager and Coaches Commission to ensure programmes, philosophies and language are aligned with those of the National Governing Body


Head Coach

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Scottish Volleyball Level III or above coaching qualification (or equivalent) or a professional qualification in coaching or Physical Education or relevant experience
  • Experience of leading and collaborating with a coaching team including additional inter-disciplinary support staff
  • Experience of establishing programmes for player recruitment
  • Experience of working with National Teams, top level domestic teams or within elite athlete development programmes
  • Understanding of holistic athlete development including, but not limited to, technical, tactical, physical, and mental/psychological development of National Team athletes
  • Ability to create an effective long-term performance plan with identified performance goals in line with SV Strategic Plan and high performance operational targets
  • Show excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Competence in IT platforms e.g. email, word, excel and forms
  • PVG checked (one can be completed prior to start date if necessary)
  • Completion of CWPS course upon appointment, with qualification maintained throughout tenure

Head Coach

Expected commitment

We feel the time indicated below for tasks is on average throughout the season. Before the season begins more time is required for budgeting and long term planning and once the season has begun, more time is required for session planning and coaching. Scottish Volleyball Indoor Performance staff will assist in all areas where possible and successful candidates will operate within an overarching National Team performance plan.


  • 4 hour per month for budget management
  • 8 hours per month for administration tasks
  • Approximately 4-6 days per year at tournaments
  • 10 hours per month delivering training during the indoor season
  • 4 hours per month on long term and session planning
  • 4 hours per month monitoring player performance
  • Most tasks offer flexibility around timing, however, tournament dates are dictated by hosts or organising body
  • All suggested hours are on average throughout the season - the competition schedule will dictate peak times

Assistant Coach

Job Specification

Summary of duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Head Coach in the recruitment of athletes to the National Team Programme
  • Assist the Head Coach with the delivery of high quality & safe practice sessions, including delivering all or part of sessions to individuals or groups of athletes
  • Support the Head Coach in managing resources through effective planning, management and monitoring of budgets
  • Support the Head Coach in creating a long term development plan with identified performance goals in line with the SV Strategic Plan and High Performance operational targets
  • Plan an effective programme within the constraints of National Team budgets and SV, CEV and FIVB calendars
  • Demonstrate behaviours, on and off the court, which embody the values of Scottish Volleyball
  • ·Support the Head Coach and Team Manager in communication with athletes and other stakeholders
  • ·Support the Head Coach in the identification of performance targets for individual athletes and support both through the development process
  • Assist the Head Coach by providing statistical analysis during competition

Assistant Coach

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Scottish Volleyball Level II or above coaching qualification (or equivalent) or a professional qualification in coaching or Physical Education or relevant experience
  • Experience of leading and collaborating with a coaching team including additional inter-disciplinary support staff
  • Experience of working with National League teams or within elite athlete development programmes
  • Understanding of holistic athlete development including, and not limited to, technical, tactical, physical, and mental/psychological development of athletes
  • Ability to create and identify performance targets within a long term plan
  • Show excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Competence in IT platforms e.g. email, word, excel, forms
  • PVG checked (one can be completed prior to start date if necessary)
  • Completion of CPWS upon appointment, maintained throughout tenure of the post
  • Good understanding of statistics, including how to record, interpret and present findings to staff and players



Assistant Coach

  • Be able to provide feedback to National Team athletes on performance, development, and reasons for non-selection


Assistant Coach

Expected commitment

  • Appointment will be made for a 2 year cycle with an annual performance review
  • 1 hour per week to support the Head Coach with budet management
  • 1 hour per week to support the Head Coach with administration tasks
  • Approximately 4-6 days at tournaments per year
  • 4 hours per month on long term/session planning
  • 4 hours per month assisting the Head Coach to monitor player performance
  • Feedback to players
  • All suggested hours are on average throughout the season - the competition schedule will dictate peak times
  • If 2 Assistant Coaches are appointed, they will be given the roles as AC1 & AC2. In the event only one Assistant Coach travels to a competiton, AC1 will be given priority

Team Manager

Job Specification

  • To liase with the performance administrator to support the programme with the organisation of, but not limited to, facility bookings, travel arrangements, competiton entry, player information and financial contributions
  • Monitor the programme email account and maintain clear lines of communication with all stakeholders
  • Lead on administration duties to allow the coaching team to focus on coaching
  • To be ‘in loco parentis’ for all athletes and staff if required
  • Track the paperwork and finances of the programme
  • Manage off court logistics, with SV, while attending international competitions
  • Attend preliminary inquiry while attending international matches
  • Ensure competition rules are clearly communicated to coaching staff and athletes
  • Maintain, organise and monitor all National Team kit including collection, distribution and cleaning
  • Manage all athletes and staff to ensure a high quality athlete experience throughout
  • Assist in the maintenance of National Team record keeping by collecting scoresheets and reporting results through official channels

Team Manager

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience of organising people remotely, in person, and at events
  • Experience of organising documentation
  • Experience of summarising key points of information for others
  • Show excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Be competent in IT platforms e.g. email, word, excel and forms
  • PVG checked prior to starting the role
  • Must successfully complete CPWS and training must be maintained throughout tenure of the post



Team Manager

Personal Skills & Attributes

  • Meticulous with record keeping
  • Proficient in IT including online storage and file sharing
  • Friendly and welcoming personality
  • Calm and organised when under pressure


Team Manager

Expectations

  • Appointment will be made for a 2 year cycle with an annual performance review
  • 4 hour per month to support the coaching staff with budget management when required
  • 4 hour per month to support the coaching staff with administration tasks
  • Approximately 4-6 days at tournaments per year when asked to travel
  • 4 hours per month assisting the coaching staff with communication including training attendance
  • 1 hour per month collecting data from athletes
  • All suggested hours are on average throughout the season - the competition schedule will dictate peak times
  • Team Managers may or may not be asked to travel with the team depending on events
  • Non-travelling Team Managers will still be required to organise kit and travel documents prior to events
